Coach Sutton has 26 years of coaching experience. During those years he has been a college assistant five years at James Madison University, Old Dominion University and George Washington University. In addition, Sutton coached at five nationally ranked high school programs: Flint Hill Preparatory, Harked Preparatory, St. John’s Prospect Hall, Montrose Christian, and Montverde Academy.
Sutton has amassed an overall coaching record of 475-115. He has won two National Championships: 1998 he was the Associate Head Coach on the USA Today Super 25 National Champion team and in 2007 he was the Head Coach of Montverde Academy Hoops.Com National Champion team. He has also coach two different schools to second place national finishes: 1999 his Montrose Christian team finished 2nd in the nation among Christian school at the National Association of Christian Athletes and then in 2010 his Montverde Academy team was runner-up in the ESPN/Rise Magazine National High School Invitational.
Coach Sutton has built the reputation of being an outstanding teacher of the game of basketball. He has help develop and place well over 130 student-athletes into college on scholarships at all levels. His reputation as an outstanding teacher affords him the opportunity to work the following prestigious camps: Nike Hoops Jamboree, Nike All-American Camp, Michael Jordan Flight School, LeBron James Skills Academy, Steve Nash Skills Academy, Kobe Bryant Skills Academy, Amare Stoudemire Skills Academy, and Paul Pierce Skills Academy.
Sutton was selected to coach for USA Basketball on three different occasions. He was an assistant coach at the Hoop Festival for the East team. He had a 2-year stint with the Junior Developmental Team U16, which won the Gold Medal in the FIBA Americas Tournament in Mendoza, Argentina. The following year, the same team, now U17, won the Gold Medal in the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. His third opportunity to work with USA Basketball was as the head coach of Nike/USA Basketball Hoop Summit, a game that showcases the top 10 International players that represent the “World Team” verses the 10 of the top American players in a showcase game. Sutton’s USA team won the game 92-80 over the World Team.
Speaking and conducting clinics in Italy, Japan, China, Germany and Argentina has given Sutton the opportunity to share his knowledge and impact the basketball world globally. He has made 12 DVD’s with Championship Productions and has written several articles that have appeared in the basketball magazines FIBA Assist Magazine, Giganti, Winning Hoops and Coaching/Athletic Director. These accomplishments have provided him the platform to share his knowledge of the game throughout the world.
Sutton has garnered a solid reputation internationally and domestically as a talent evaluator, teacher of the game, program builder and tactician and recruiter, all the while maintaining a high level of character, class and integrity.
